Materials & Design Our Materials Reclaimed Wood Our homewares are primarily crafted from 100% solid reclaimed Indonesian Suar or Acacia and Teak wood. These materials come from remnants of local furniture production and renovated traditional wooden houses in Java, Indonesia. Some of our products are also made from old, damaged, or sinking traditional boats, purchased directly from local fishermen. These boats are typically built from solid, durable, and resistant materials like Teak, Iron, or Mahogany wood. Our store also offers unique, one-of-a-kind pieces created from a limited stock of broken or abandoned traditional rice pounders. Rattan Rattan is a fast-growing, renewable material with a short growth cycle. In Indonesia, it holds significant cultural importance and plays a vital role in the livelihoods of many communities. Rattan weaving is a centuries-old tradition that has produced highly skilled local artisans, who craft beautiful furniture, decorations, and accessories. We are excited to showcase the exquisite rattan weaving creations of these talented artisans to you Coconut Shell The coconut tree is often called "The Tree of Life," a vital symbol in Indonesian society. It holds immense cultural significance, touching nearly every aspect of life. Indonesians have long utilized every part of the coconut tree to sustain their livelihoods. The coconut shell, in particular, is widely used to craft a variety of decorative items, from bowls to jewelry. Our goal is to preserve this traditional craftsmanship while creating beautifully designed products for everyone to enjoy and admire. Natural Dyes Over 20% of global freshwater pollution is caused by the chemical dyes and processing agents used in clothing production. At Asha Ethnica, we are committed to sustainable solutions, embracing natural dyes as an eco-friendly alternative for fabric coloring. By collaborating with skilled artisans and local businesses across Indonesia, we proudly offer a curated selection of home décor and fashion items, artfully crafted from natural dyes and fabrics. Our natural dyes are meticulously sourced from a variety of plants, each chosen for its unique and vibrant hues. Rich, earthy browns are derived from spurred mangrove (Ceriops tagal ) and red mangrove (Rhizophora mucronata ), while striking blues are created using true indigo (Indigo tinctoria L. ) and anil indigo (Indigo suffruticosa ). The warm golden-yellow tones come from the locally cherished tegeran (Cudrania javanensis ), and delicate greens are extracted from the leaves of mango (Mangifera indica ) and Indian almond (Terminalia catappa ). Additionally, some of our products showcase intricate patterns created by the natural pigments of leaves and flowers sourced from an array of indigenous plants. Our dyeing methods celebrate time-honored traditions, from the intricate patterns of Batik to the refined Japanese Shibori tie-dye and Tataki-zomé plant bashing techniques, along with India Flint’s innovative eco-printing . Each method imparts distinctive patterns, depth, and artistry, making every textile a unique expression of heritage and craftsmanship. Asha Ethnica proudly offers products that not only embody the beauty of nature but also represent a strong commitment to a sustainable and eco-conscious future. Most of our fashion products are made from exquisite handwoven cotton and rayon fabrics, meticulously crafted by local artisans in Indonesia. These skilled artisans, primarily women, not only sustain their livelihoods through this timeless craft but also play a vital role in safeguarding the rich cultural heritage of hand weaving for future generations. 'Purun' Peat Swamp Grass Purun , a resilient grass-like aquatic plant endemic to Indonesia’s peatlands, particularly in Borneo and Sumatra, is celebrated for its exceptional strength and durability as a weaving material. For centuries, local communities have relied on Purun to craft mats, hats, bags, and baskets, showcasing its vital role in traditional craftsmanship and everyday life. Thriving as a short-cycle plant dependent on water, Purun cultivation is deeply intertwined with peatland conservation, positioning it as both an ecological and cultural cornerstone. Through the promotion of Purun crafts, we aim to highlight their beauty and functionality, empower local artisans, and champion sustainable peatland conservation—uniting heritage, livelihood, and environmental stewardship in a single meaningful endeavor. Recycled Plastic Plastic waste is a pressing global challenge, and Indonesia holds the unfortunate distinction of being the world’s second-largest contributor to this crisis. At Asha Ethnica, we recognize the urgency of this issue and are determined to make a difference. By promoting beautifully crafted products made from used and recycled plastics, we aim to transform waste into purposeful, stylish creations. Each piece tells a story of environmental responsibility and the potential for positive change. Our Design Our designs draw inspiration from the rich Indonesian culture and nature, blended with modern concepts of practical homeware and fashion. Each design is tailored to the available natural and reclaimed materials, resulting in unique products that may vary slightly in shape and color. We prioritize safety by using a 100% food-grade natural polish made from beeswax and olive oil.
